AAJS Annual International Conference

The African Association for Japanese Studies (AAJS) is pleased to invite scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to its 2026 Annual Conference.

Theme: Reimagining Africa In Japanese Media: Narratives, Representations, and Influences.

This year’s conference will explore the shifting dynamics of Japan–Africa relations, with a special focus on youth-led initiatives, development partnerships, and future-facing cultural, technological, and policy intersections.

Venue: Lead City University, Ibadan.
Dates: October 13–16, 2026.
Abstract Submission Deadline: 30th June 2026.

Abstract Submission for AAJS 2026 Annual Conference

The African Association for Japanese Studies (AAJS) invites scholars, policymakers, and practitioners to submit abstracts for the 2026 conference, themed "Reimagining Africa In Japanese Media: Narratives, Representations, and Influences." The conference will explore the evolving dynamics of Japan-Africa relations, with a focus on youth-centric initiatives.

We invite papers on the high points of the narrative above and more specifically on African portrayals in Japanese media, including anime, music, news, social media, and AI-generated content. Topics may also include:


1. Africa in lapanese anime and manga.
2. Representation of African culturesinJ-pop and music.
3. News and media coverage of Africa in Japan.
4. Social media and online discourse on Africa-Japan relations.
5. AI-generated content and emerging media trends Objectives.
6.Africa in Japanese narratives, Literature, Comparative Studies.
7. Foster dialogue on Africa-Japan media collaborations.
8. Showcase African perspectives in Japanese media.
9. Explore opportunities for cultural exchange and cooperation.

The AAJS invites undergraduate, postgraduate, and early career academics to submit concept notes for full scholarship to attend the conference. Selected applicants will receive support to participate in the conference and be given the opportunity for mentoring while presenting their research. The best abstract and the best concept note will be given special awards.
Selected papers will be considered for publication in the Studies in Transnational Africa and Japan the AAJS Journal.
All abstracts and concept notes (not exceeding 250 words and 500 words, respectively) should engage with the central conference theme, Reimagining Africa In Japanese Media: Narratives, Representations, and Influences, and situate discussions within the broader scope of African Studies and Japanese Studies. Contributors are encouraged to highlight new research, comparative perspectives, or innovative approaches that deepen understanding of the evolving connections between Japan and Africa.
